Working hard for a good cause

Recently, more than 35 employees from our Paramus, NJ office rolled up their sleeves and helped out at Habitat for Humanity of Bergen County’s “Brush with Kindness” project, renovating a home to accommodate Zoey Komninos, a child with cerebral palsy. Joining the Habitat Bergen crew multiple times, teams of CUnet volunteers became the latest group of “Zoey’s construction angels.”

In total, we spent more than a combined 140 hours working on the project, and more than twice the amount of time the average person spends engaging in volunteer activities over an entire year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The “Brush with Kindness” renovation project is for the benefit of Zoey Komninos, a 7-year-old girl with severe cerebral palsy and seizure disorder. CUnet’s team helped the project provide wheelchair access throughout the first floor of the Komninos’s New Milford house, install a handicap bathroom with wheel-in tub, provide a living space for a live-in caregiver, and enlarge the bedroom to accommodate both medical and therapy equipment, and also provide a larger space so that Zoey, her parents and two siblings can all interact together in a single room.

Habitat Bergen is a non-profit organization, whose mission is to provide decent, affordable housing here in Bergen County. The organization uses volunteer labor and donated funds and materials to complete their projects. Corporate teams are a welcome addition. These dedicated volunteers not only donate their time and energy, their management partners financially with the affiliate to offset the cost for materials and building supplies. Any organization wishing to schedule a “team build” should contact the Habitat Bergen office at 201-457-1020 to reserve a date.
